How auctions work

Each sale shows the scheduled closing time for the lot or sale in the catalogue. The exact timing can depend on the sale format, staggered closing rules and any bid-extension settings, so check the sale details and Auction Terms before bidding.

A timed online sale runs through a closing window, with lots closing according to the published schedule. A webcast sale is conducted live at a scheduled time with an auctioneer or live sale feed, and may also allow pre-bids or absentee bids before the webcast.

If a bid is placed near the end of a timed lot, the lot may be extended according to the sale's bid-extension settings. The countdown will show the updated time; refer to the sale terms because extension rules vary.

Yes. Nextlot supports bidding from a mobile device, including timed online and webcast auctions. Sign in, request approval, accept the sale terms and confirm that the sale shows you as approved before trying to place a bid.

Create or sign in to your Nextlot bidder account, select the sale, choose Request to Bid and accept the sale terms. Approval may be immediate or may remain pending if the sale manager requires more information; you cannot bid until approval is confirmed.

Open the sale catalogue and select More Details or Auction Terms. The sale page should show the buyer's premium, payment and pickup information, viewing details and other conditions; read these terms before requesting approval or placing a bid.

Timed online FAQs

Contact StockLive or the sale manager before listing so the livestock can be assessed and the required information, imagery and supporting records can be prepared. The assessment process and deadline depend on the sale and livestock type.

Payment timing is set by the sale terms and the arrangements between the buyer, sale manager and vendor. After the sale closes, confirm the invoice, payment deadline and settlement process with the sale manager rather than relying on a standard timeframe.

StockLive can help agents and sale managers prepare and list livestock on a vendor's behalf. Gather the vendor's details, livestock information, media and sale instructions, then confirm the listing and approval requirements with the StockLive team.

Underbidder information is not available in the same way for every sale. Visibility depends on the sale configuration and the auction house's policy, so contact StockLive or the sale manager after the sale if you need confirmation.

In a timed auction, you can enter the highest amount you are prepared to pay. Nextlot places bids for you at the required increments up to that maximum, and the lot will show Leading or Outbid as bidding changes.

Staggered closing means lots close at different times instead of all at once. A bid placed near a lot's closing time may extend that lot for a preset period, but the sale page and terms control the exact rules.

Lots you bid on are typically added to your watchlist, and you can add other lots manually. Use the watchlist to follow the lots you care about and check the sale's notification settings for outbid alerts.

Pre-bid & webcast FAQs

A pre-bid is placed before the webcast and can be used to establish an opening or maximum position, depending on the sale setup. Live bidding takes place during the webcast, when approved bidders compete in real time.

Some webcast sales use reserves, but whether a reserve is available, how it is set and what happens if it is not met are sale-specific decisions. Confirm the reserve arrangement with StockLive or the sale manager before the catalogue is published.

Sign in to the approved bidder account, request approval for the sale, accept the terms and place the pre-bid against the correct lot. If you are acting for a client, make sure the bid authority, maximum amount and client details are confirmed before submitting.

Both are bids placed before a webcast, but the label and bidding behaviour depend on the sale configuration. Read the sale instructions carefully: a pre-bid may use maximum-bid logic, while an absentee bid may be held for the auctioneer to execute during the live sale.

Check your internet connection, refresh the page and confirm you are signed in, approved and have accepted the sale terms. If the bid button still shows View Only or you cannot re-enter, use the sale's technical support contact while the sale is live.

For vendors and agents

The right format depends on the livestock, buyer audience, event timing and level of live support you need. StockLive can help you compare timed online, webcast, pre-bid and absentee options and build a sale structure that fits.

Prepare vendor details, livestock descriptions, assessment data, images or video, sale dates, viewing and pickup information, terms, buyer's premium and any bidder requirements. StockLive can confirm the final checklist for your sale.

Set a reserve with the vendor and sale manager before the catalogue is published, and record it clearly in the sale setup. The reserve strategy should reflect the vendor's instructions and the published sale terms; it does not guarantee a sale.

Publish clear sale terms and decide whether bidder approval is automatic or requires review. Make sure bidders can find the terms, understand any deposit or identity requirements and know who to contact if approval remains pending.

StockLive can support sale preparation, platform setup and sale-day delivery, including live online formats and technical coordination. For a live issue, use the technical support contact shown in the sale; contact the sale manager for lot-specific or contractual questions.
